US News: 8 Strength training tips for women

Women's Health: Strength Training

Discouraging words
  • Army friend: You squat?!?
  • Me: Yea, I love it.
  • Army friend: It's so bad for your knees! You really shouldn't squat.
  • Me: Well I don't just squat. I do other stuff. Curls, pull downs, bench... deadlift.
  • Army friend: You bench?! You shouldn't bench.
  • Me: ... Why?
  • Army friend: Why do you think I work out?
  • Me: To be more efficient? Gain strength?
  • Army friend: No, I lift to look good. Lifting weights is for building on the muscle and male asthetics and you can't really do that. (As a woman it does nothing for you so why do it?)
  • Me: But... but... I like lifting.
  • Army friend: Do crossfit. Do circuit training. Run. You should stop lifting.
  • Okay tumblr friends... please give me a freakin' review of the falsities and / or truth of this convo. I know this guy had good intentions but... now I'm very discouraged by my lifting. Maybe I should just stick to running and / or go back to Crossfit. I just don't really have the money for CF right now and don't know how to do it alone. So yea... lifting good or bad for efficiency and strength? Basically my mental thoughts have been at war since this convo and I can't get it out of my head. Help!
